As part of the Dalkeith Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) and Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS) (see www.dalkeiththi.co.uk) a heritage trail for the town centre has been developed.
The trail has been produced by the Dalkeith Heritage Trail Group with representatives from, Dalkeith Community Council, Dalkeith History Society, Dalkeith Youth Forum, Dalkeith Business Renewal, Midlothian Council, Melville Housing Association and local businesses in the town. The group has produced a leaflet which highlights the trail, taking in important historic buildings such as the Tolbooth, the former Cross Keys hotel, the grave yard watch tower, DalkeithPalace, the Corn Exchange and others.
The trail has been added to by Susan Grant, Midlothian’s Artist in Residence who has developed the “iwozheredalkeith” initiative. This has involved collecting stories and memories from local people and recording them and taking some of them for a series of plaques in the town for a public art trail. So you can follow the heritage trail and also take in the red plaques “iwozheredalkeith” trail. This gives a fascinating glimpse into the town’s colourful history and unique heritage.
