Rosslyn Conservation
Tuesday, 11 August 2009
The past few months at Rosslyn Chapel have been very exciting for those of us who work and care for Rosslyn Chapel. Since 1995, the Rosslyn Chapel Trust has been fundraising in order to carry out vital conservation work to this five hundred year old building. Work that would mean the building could survive for another five hundred years.

Finally, with the backing of Historic Scotland, the Heritage Lottery Fund and the increase in visitor numbers thanks to a small book called ‘The Da Vinci Code’, we finally have the money to begin the essential work at the chapel.

Over the last few months a great deal of scaffolding has been erected around, over and inside Rosslyn Chapel. This is to give access to the team of Stone Masons who will be removing the asphalt covering on the outside of the Chapel roof, but also to allow them to clean up and record the inside of the chapel ceiling. This has been a great opportunity to see and touch carvings in the ceiling of the chapel that no one has been close to in over fifty years and who knows when anyone will get this chance again. The stone masons have been chipping away on the outside Asphalt and visitors can now see the original chapel stone roof as it would have been when it was originally carved. But not for long! The plan for the roof is that a timber frame will be erected over the stone roof and a led covering placed on top. This will ensure that the roof remains watertight and the work that is taking place now will help to ease the damp problem that we currently face inside. This is a very exciting time to be at Rosslyn Chapel and for more pictures and information about the building, please visit our website www.rosslynchapel.com
