Explore Midlothian
A new publication highlighting local beauty spots and showcasing walks and trails throughout Midlothian is now available free to download and at a variety of locations throughout the area. With16 trails and plenty of information about locally based activities and visitor attractions there is plenty for the eager visitor to see and do!
TyneEsk Trails
The trails comprise four circular routes open to horses, cyclists and walkers. They vary in length from 10 to 15 miles and allow for glorious views of the Midlothian countryside, taking in sites of both historic and natural interest. The British Horse Society is working on a variety of projects throughout Midlothian. Visit their website to find out more about the UK's equestrian trails network.
Midlothian's Countryside Walks
Less than ten miles south of Edinburgh city centre, Midlothian is blessed with a beautiful and scenic countryside filled with local wildlife. Midlothian Ranger Service manages this inspiring countryside which is just waiting to be explored.
Ten Health Walks Around Dalkeith

Pentland Hills
The Pentland Hills Regional Park is a living, working landscape comprising 10,000 acres of countryside and over 100km of paths. Visitors to the park can enjoy walking, biking, horse-riding, fishing and orienteering. The park is also home to a variety of wildlife and ancient relics. (Tel. 0131 445 3003)
Vogrie Country Park
Located near Gorebridge this council managed, 19th century estate is surrounded by a formalised park, walled garden, farmland and woods. There are many ranger led events taking place throughout the year. (Tel. 01875 821990)
Midlothian Council is developing its Access Strategy to provide path networks for walking, cycling, horseriding across Midlothian. The Land Reform Act (Scotland) 2003 requires the preparation of a Core Path Plan, or map of paths, in the Midlothian area. Work is already underway in this respect. For more information contact
