A young football fanatic is calling on music lovers to help her team's fundraising efforts. Lia Tweedie (12) is the youngest member of the Hibs Girls' U-15 squad, which will be competing in a Spanish soccer tournament at Easter. In a bid to raise £7000 for the team's transport and accommodation costs, Lia's family have organised a concert in Bilston Miners' Club on Saturday evening. Tickets are now on sale for the event featuring the Border Boogie Band. The Hibs Girls will be one of six teams from across Europe taking part in the four-day competition, near Barcelona, from April 1. This is the first time the squad of 15 have entered this competition, and so far they have managed to raise about £2000 to meet the travel costs for the players, two coaches and three parent helpers. Lia's dad Paul explained the team had raised almost a third of the costs through donations and events such as bag packing. Sponsorship from local businesses would also be welcome. Left midfielder Lia, who lives in Charlton Grove, Roslin, has been playing football for four years. The youngsters, who is in S1 at Beeslack Community High School, has played for Hutchison Vale and Loanhead Miners' before joining Hibs Girls. "She is playing above her age level," said Paul, whose other daughter, Millie, is a keen gymnast. "She was playing for the U-13s team when she was 10." For tickets contact Lia's mum Isla on 07786 543 765 or Valerie Watt on 07786 681 454. |
