Conductor Alan Fernie has been honoured by the Scottish Brass Band Association. Mr Fernie, of Newtongrange, received the association's President's Award for his service to Scotland's youth band movement. He has conducted the Loanhead Brass Rootlets, Newtongrange Junior Band and Peebles Junior Band in the novice section, Loanhead Brass Roots in the development section, and the Scottish Borders Youth Band in the senior section. Also during Sunday's Scottish Youth Brass Band Championships, Loanhead Brass Rootlets MacTaggart Scott Loanhead Band's most junior group received the gold award. They were runners-up in their section. Mr Fernie's other four bands won silver awards. On Saturday, senior players from Midlothian were in action St David's Brass in the Scottish Challenge Cup and Newtongrange Silver Band in the Scottish Open Championship. St David's, led by musical director John Dickinson, were runners-up in their contest. The Loanhead junior bands had another boost recently when they learnt that a grant application to Awards for All had been successful. They received £5,000 for project SmartSound, which will lead to the young players looking smarter in new uniforms and sounding even better due to the purchase of some new instruments. Loanhead Brass Roots will be bringing in some Christmas cheer with a traditional concert of carols at Loanhead Library at 7:30pm on Wednesday, December 9. Loanhead Brass Rootlets will also perform. Ticket demand is expected to be high, and it is recommended that those hoping to attend obtain free tickets at the earliest possible date.
