For more than 20 years it was familiar sight and sound at Midlothian gala days and social events. But dwindling membership eventually led to the distinctive refrains of the Cameronian Flute Band being silenced — apparently for good. About 13 years on from its last public outing, however, the community band — originally founded in 1975 by the late Thomas Plunkett and David Hanratty — is set to march once more. Bonnyrigg resident Ann White and several other ex-members have launched a recruitment drive with a view to re-starting the band in 2010. From mid-January, the reformed Cameronian Flute Band will practice every Thursday from 7-9pm in Poltonhall Community Centre. Members hope to parade at community events next summer. Experienced flautists and drummers, former band members and anyone wanting to learn the instrument should contact Mrs White on 07598-576744. All ages are welcome. |
